Possibility of Silicon Valley’s first all-electric transit bus

bus008_jpg.jpg

A hybrid bus company wants to open a manufacturing facility in San Jose.

Officials in San Jose’s Electronic Transportation Development Center as well as Mayor Chuck Reed support the proposed move by Proterra LLC of Golden, Colo., but city officials are also looking at other green companies that could benefit the region’s growing cleantech sector.

Proterra and its partners design, develop and manufacture hybrid-electric, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric, zero-emission buses and vans that can be used as transit, school and commercial buses. Proterra CEO Dale Hill said the company plans to unveil a prototype bus, developed through a public-private partnership, at an event tentatively set for Feb. 6 at San Jose City Hall.

Hill said Proterra is looking at the possibility of opening a San Jose manufacturing facility for the electronic components of the bus. Hill notes that Silicon Valley is a leader in cleantech technology and being close to the innovation makes sense.

Doubletree Hotel San Jose Contributes to Water Saving Efforts

SAN JOSE – Santa Clara Valley Water District is helping hotels and other businesses cut costs, and improve their bottom line while enhancing their environmental credentials by achieving significant water savings.

Doubletree Hotel San Jose joined a growing list of businesses, apartment buildings and schools taking advantage of Valley Water’s free Commercial High-Efficiency Toilet Installation Program by replacing 503 old water-guzzling toilets.

With the new toilets in place, the hotel can now expect to save more than 10,800 gallons per day or nearly 4,000,000 gallons a year, the equivalent of six Olympic-sized swimming pools.

“Based on the results of similar replacements at Doubletree Hotels in other places, we expect to reduce our water usage costs by about 40 percent,” said Sam Claude, director of operations, Doubletree Hotel San Jose.

Doubletree is steadfast in seeking opportunities to align itself with greener business practices. Valley Water’s program offered an obvious way to achieve that and continue our own ongoing efforts to reduce our environmental footprint.”

“This is really a win-win situation for both the Doubletree San Jose and Santa Clara County. At a time when the state is experiencing a drought, and both the economy and environment are suffering, our Commercial High-Efficiency Toilet Installation Program offers local businesses a free and painless way to cut costs and save water,” said Valley Water CEO Olga Martin Steele.

The program also helps businesses achieve the 10 percent voluntary cut back that Valley Water has called for. The voluntary cutback is necessitated by the state-wide drought, which has been further compounded by a 2007 court ruling requiring severe restriction on pumping water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The Delta delivers about one-third of the Bay Area’s annual water supplies.

The High-Efficiency Toilet Installation Program, which is available to qualifying businesses as well as apartment complexes and schools in Santa Clara County, replaces older tank-type toilets that flush at 3.5 gallons per flush (gpf) or higher, with new high-efficiency toilets, which flush at 1.28 gpf or less.

The cost of the new toilets and labor for removal and installation are completely free to program participants, with funding being partially provided by the City of San Jose and a grant from the California Department of Water Resources.
Since the inception of the program in 2004, approximately 820 Santa Clara County businesses and institutions have taken advantage of the program, with more than 11,000 high-efficiency toilets being installed.

Valley Water offers many other commercial water conservation programs. To learn more about these and other conservation programs, visit www.valleywater.org or call 408.265.2607, ext. 2554.

The Santa Clara Valley Water District manages wholesale drinking water resources and provides stewardship for the county’s watersheds, including 10 reservoirs, hundreds of miles of streams and groundwater basins. Valley Water also provides flood protection throughout Santa Clara County.

TAG, YOU’RE IT!

arbor-day.jpg

OMAHA, Neb., April 24, 2008 – The ultimate game of environmental tag is spreading from state to state today as students kick-off a game of “Tree Tag” to celebrate the world’s oldest environmental holiday.

Equipped with forest-green ribbons and eco-friendly tree tags in hand, 10,000 students in more than 150 communities will take part in a month-long initiative to raise awareness about the importance of trees through Doubletree Hotels Teaching Kids to CARE® environmental education program. This spring initiative, created in collaboration with the Arbor Day Foundation®, is appropriately themed Get to Know the Tree Next Door.

The tree-focused movement is taking root in the home state where Arbor Day began. Students from Grace Abbott Elementary School in Omaha, Nebraska – the state where Arbor Day began – will participate in the first of many Great Community Tree Tag events. Students and teachers will work with team members from the Doubletree Hotel Omaha Downtown and Doubletree Guest Suites Omaha to “tag” the prominent trees on their school grounds and nearby neighborhood – tying on an eco-friendly tree tag that outlines unique facts behind each particular tree. This celebration is just a sample of the many community events that will take place as part of this nationwide environmental education campaign.

Now in its sixth year, the Teaching Kids to CARE spring initiative will help educate 10,000 elementary school students across the U.S. and Canada during the months of April and May about the important role trees play in our everyday lives and the many benefits they provide.

“There are so many children and adults today who simply pass by the natural beauty of trees that populate their communities every day, without understanding how important trees are to our everyday survival. Our Teaching Kids to CARE spring initiative not only immerses kids in nature, it teaches them how to creatively express their appreciation for trees and their role in the environment every day,” said Dave Horton, senior vice president, brand management for Doubletree Hotels. “Everyone can identify with a game of tag … Doubletree just decided to have a little fun with it. By educating and instilling a caring attitude about the environment in children at a young age, we hope to make a positive impact for years to come.”

Doubletree Hotels and the Arbor Day Foundation have worked together to develop lesson plans and education resources for participating schools and youth organizations to teach children about the various types of trees that live in their very own backyards and neighborhood parks. Using an official Tree Identification Guide from the Arbor Day Foundation, students will learn about a variety of local tree species and the methods and techniques that arborists use to identify trees across North America. In addition, they’ll explore the importance of trees in the environment, functions of each part of a tree and fun facts surrounding some of the most unique trees in the world.

With tree lessons learned, creative imaginations and Tree Identification Guides in hand, kids will be appointed as “Official Arbor Ambassadors” to write their own “My Tree and Me” story to express why they care about trees and share their stories and learnings with their fellow students.

“The Doubletree Teaching Kids to CARE program will help thousands of kids learn about the value of trees – by actually identifying the ones that are important to them,” said Kevin Sander, corporate marketing director for the Arbor Day Foundation. “As a result of this initiative, a whole new generation of children will truly understand their important role in enhancing and improving the sustainability of our earth’s resources.”
