Holiday Travel Gifts

The holiday season is upon us again, whether we like it or not! I sure do love the festive lights, the cheerful spirit, and spending time with the ones I love, but man are there some downfalls to the holidays. Not only are the malls a mess, but it’s so hard to shop for people these days. Most of the time I simply give a gift card and call it a day, but I found this awesome website called Fab.com that has the most hilarious (and inexpensive) items that would be perfect as gifts! Being that DoubleTree by Hilton San Jose is in the travel industry, here are some great travel gifts to give (or to suggest as a gift you may like). Enjoy!

Flying 101 Luggage Tags

“Being stuck at the airport during the holidays is no picnic, but these luggage tags from Flight 001 are here to make the harrowing experience more manageable. A great gift for the jetsetter with a sense of humor, or for the nomad who needs one, this set of four funny and colorful tags makes bags easily identifiable, while its rubber construction makes them durable enough for even the most frequent fliers.”

Pan AM-Vintage Fabulous Travel Bag

“Pan Am’s collection of totes, passport covers, and carry-ons are the chic offspring of a successful airline that peaked at the start of mass air travel. Given to only first class passengers, Pan Am bags became a status symbol carried by the rich, elite, and (often) famous. Here, the company shows off its favorites.”

Flight 001 Eye Mask

“Being stuck at the airport during the holidays is no picnic, but the creative folks from Flight 001 are here to make the harrowing experience more manageable. For the jetsetter with a sense of humor, or for the nomad who needs one, this Sorry We’re Closed Eye Mask is the perfect gift to give ‘em a good laugh—AND a good night’s sleep!”

Flight Travel Organizer

“Small enough to call it a wallet. Large enough that it keeps track of a large number of things. Fun, colorful and completely functional, this travel wallet features many pouches and pockets to keep all your important documents safe. Perfect for a jetsetter who has many cards, coins, keys and other small items to keep in order—or the everyday commuter who has a lot to keep track of on her way to work.”

SAN JOSE JOINS U.S. TRAVEL ASSOC. IN CELEBRATING TRAVEL AND TOURISM

SAN JOSE, CA – (May 8, 2012) Joining more than 75 cities nationwide in rallies to champion travel, San Jose took part in the 29th annual National Travel and Tourism Week today, officially marking the annual week with a dedication at San Jose City Council Tuesday afternoon.

This tradition first started in 1984 when the U.S. Congress passed a joint resolution designating the week to be celebrated in May. Since then, the celebration has grown with localized events in cities, states and travel businesses nationwide to champion the power of the travel industry in the U.S.

Travel is among the largest private-sector employers in the U.S., supporting over 14.4 million jobs in 2011, including 7.5 million directly in the travel industry and 6.9 million in other industries, meaning 1 out of every 9 jobs in the U.S. depends on travel and tourism.

San Jose is a unique destination, with a distinctive tourism model that integrates the Convention Center, hotels, Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, other meeting venues, attractions, arts and local business together to act as one team to help visitors navigate San Jose. The result is innovative strategies and enhanced attendee experiences saving event planners time, energy and resources.

In San Jose, the estimated results for Fiscal Year 2011-2012 will total over 7 million visitors to the destination and close to 1 million visitors to the Convention Center and downtown Cultural Facilities generating $52 million in visitor spending and 218,000 hotel room night bookings.

California travel-related spending rose 10% in 2011 to an estimated $104 billion, the first time visitor spending broke the $100 billion mark. In 2010, approximately 200 million visitors generated $95.1 billion in spending on goods and services in the state.

Visitor spending directly supported jobs for 873,000 Californians and resulted in $6.1 billion in direct state and local tax revenues.

“San Jose is a wonderful place for families to visit and offers some great attractions throughout the city, not to mention it has some of the best weather in the nation,” said Councilmember Pete Constant, who presented the proclamation to several representatives from San Jose’s tourism industry. “This week gives us the chance to show others why they should come and visit San Jose.”

Since 1989, San Jose’s hotel and tourism industry has grown to an estimated $200 million hotel revenue industry, generating over $10 million annually in tax revenue to support city services.

“San Jose’s tourism industry is a key economic driver for our community,” said Bill Sherry, CEO of Team San Jose, the City’s manager of the Convention Center, four theaters and also serves as the Convention and Visitors Bureau for the destination. “The recently launched San Jose Convention Center expansion and renovation project, a $120 million investment is a testament by City leadership to the importance of the meetings and conventions industry in our community. San Jose as the Capital of Silicon Valley is positioned well to compete with other destinations, attract more visitors and spur our local economy.”

The City of San Jose officially announced plans to move forward with the construction of an additional 125,000 square feet of meeting and ballroom space and renovation at the San Jose Convention Center last year. The Convention Center opened in 1989 and currently offers 425,000 square feet of exhibit, ballroom and meeting space. The expansion will add an additional 125,000 square feet of flexible ballroom and meeting room space, increasing San Jose’s Convention Center space to 550,000 square feet of usable space. The center remains open through the renovation and expansion project with the new project completion planned for September 2013.

Travel and tourism in the United States provides significant economic benefits for the nation, generating $1.9 trillion in economic output in 2011, with $813 billion spent directly by travelers that spurred an additional $1.1 trillion in other industries.

Travel Tip

Whenever you arrive in any country, whether it be by boat, plane or whatever you are vulnerable. You have all your cash, cards, documents and anything else valuable on you right at that moment. It is even worse if you have never been there before and look like you haven’t, there are always people who are willing to “help”. Every precaution you take will help to avoid any potential problems. After all you do not want someone to “help” themselves to your belongings, when you have just arrived. Here are a few tips that should help.

Before leaving for your trip, try to get some prior information as to the rough layout of the airport where you will be arriving. This will help, to have a vague sense of where you should be going and where the taxis are located etc.

Whenever possible, especially in certain countries we recommend taking either the airport limousine, or a hotel pick up.

Never take a taxi that seems just to be hanging around, offering its services when there is a taxi queue available.

Try to keep your wallet and valuables safely secured in a handbag or in one of your hand luggage.

Change some money into the local currency before you depart. This gives you one less thing to worry about, and will stop you from pulling a large amount of money out at the airport arrivals.

Keep a small amount of this local currency, easily accessible in a pocket or something, and away from the majority of your well earned money. You will need sufficient for the ride into town, a tip (perhaps) and a little for unforeseen needs like toll ways or a bottle of water.

If you have not been able to find anything out about the airport that you are visiting then ask one of the airline staff, or the government tourism booth (if they have one at the airport) for some assistance, or tips on the best way of travelling.

Most countries really are very safe, but in others it is really very advisable to take to take as many precautions as possible. No matter what, the most important is that you have a great holiday.

DoubleTree by Hilton Introduces New Global Brand Identity

Article from BusinessWire:

Hilton Worldwide today introduced a new brand logo and name for DoubleTree by Hilton (currently Doubletree) in front of more than 1,900 hotel owners, operators and corporate executives at the company’s first-ever Global Partnership Conference in Orlando. This first phase of a renewed DoubleTree by Hilton business strategy has been developed to further reinforce the brand’s relationship within the Hilton Worldwide portfolio of hotels and the company’s continued commitment to the future growth, expansion, and evolution of DoubleTree by Hilton within the hospitality industry.

“The introduction of our new DoubleTree by Hilton global identity communicates, with a new unified worldwide look, the brand’s proud Hilton Worldwide affiliation and acts as a stronger symbol for current and future customers to associate today’s DoubleTree by Hilton with its highly positive brand attributes”

The DoubleTree by Hilton logo and name officially will be launched during the first half of 2011, as part of a comprehensive rebranding initiative that will feature new advertising, marketing and communications campaigns, as well as new amenities and services for guests at DoubleTree by Hilton’s fast-growing collection of 240 hotels on five continents.

Design features of the DoubleTree by Hilton brand identity include:

* Addition of “by Hilton” to the brand name in proper theme and variation, to create a more direct affiliation and distinction between DoubleTree and its parent company, Hilton Worldwide;
* Introduction of a modern, sophisticated, stylized illustration of the brand’s signature two trees;
* Integration of new, contemporary fonts and color palettes custom-designed for the brand

“By celebrating a modern, updated look and feel for DoubleTree by Hilton in logo, product and services, we hope this new brand strategy will enhance name recognition and consumer preference and energize these outstanding hotels’ natural and welcoming characteristics for many months and years to come,” said Paul Brown, president – global brands and commercial services for Hilton Worldwide.
