San Jose Theaters

Team San Jose Launches Unified Website for Four Historic Theaters

Single Portal Lets Consumers Book San Jose Civic, California Theatre, Montgomery Theater and Center for the Performing Arts in One Stop

SAN JOSE, CA (January 29, 2013) – Now theater lovers in Silicon Valley have a helpful new tool to make planning and booking their arts season easier. Team San Jose — which manages four historic cultural theaters in Downtown San Jose on behalf the City of San Jose — launched a single, unified theater portal so theater patrons and potential performing arts promoters can more efficiently browse arts and entertainment content along with events taking place at the San Jose Civic (home to A-List concerts and events), Center for the Performing Arts (home to Broadway San Jose and Ballet San Jose), California Theatre (home to Opera San Jose, Cinequest Annual Film Festival and Symphony Silicon Valley), and Montgomery Theater (home to Children’s Musical Theater San Jose and Lyric Theatre of San Jose).

“We want to connect theater and arts lovers to be plugged into the latest information on San Jose’s innovative events in one central location they can access anytime, anywhere,” said Bill Sherry, CEO of Team San Jose. “Rather than have to review different sites for different theaters, patrons and event promoters can now research venues and buy in one easy stop.”

With a user-friendly interface, the new website offers residents and visitors new features such as:

  • Streamlined process for buying tickets at all four theaters
  • Highly specific technical information for potential event promoters, performing arts groups looking for theater informatio
  • Increased information on San Jose venues and upcoming events
  • Social media tabs with direct links to social media channels, so arts lovers can stay connected with the latest buzz from their peers.

For more information on Team San Jose’s four theaters, visit the new website at: www.sanjosetheaters.org

The four historic theaters consist of:

San Jose Civic: Built in 1934, the 3,036-seat San Jose Civic has classic Spanish mission-style architecture and has been at the core of San Jose’s cultural activity and traditions.

California Theatre: The 1,122-seat California Theatre is known today as one of the best-preserved examples of late 1920s motion picture houses in the United States.

Montgomery Theater: Built in 1936, the 475-seat theater retains its historic charm and offers audiences an intimate experience for every performance.

The Center for the Performing Arts (CPA): The new kid on the block at 40 years old, the 2,677-seat elegant CPA was designed by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

Make it a STAYcation this weekend!

Next to Normal at San Jose Rep

The San Jose Rep is putting on a great performance called “Next to Normal“. The show is a “rock musical about one woman’s struggle with bipolar disorder and the toll it takes on her family. Diana is having hallucinations. She makes sandwiches on the floor, bakes a birthday cake for a long deceased brother and sees her doctor (Mark Farrell) as a flamboyant rock star. Attempts to treat her condition, first with pills and then with electroshock therapy (the play was originally titled Feeling Electric), only make things worse for her and her family” says Sean Conwell from Sanjose.com.

Make a night of it and come to Spencer’s for Steaks and Chops before (or after) the show and have a great date night with that special someone. Or make it a Staycation and book a suite with us!

Reservations for Spencer’s can be made at 408-437-2170 or to book a room go to our DoubleTree by Hilton San Jose website.

Grease is a 1978 American musical film directed by Randal Kleiser and based on Warren Casey’s and Jim Jacobs’s 1971 musical of the same name about two lovers in a 1950s high school. The film stars John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing, and Jeff Conaway. It was successful both critically and at the box office; its soundtrack album ended 1978 as the second-best selling album of the year in the United States, behind the soundtrack of Saturday Night Fever, another film starring Travolta.

Avenue Q this Week/Weekend!

“Avenue Q” is the smash Broadway musical hit about real life in New York City as told by a cast of people and puppets through a hilariously irreverent musical score. The three-time Tony Award-winning musical will make its debut at San Jose Stage Company with performances beginning June 1, running through July 3. San Jose Stage Company’s production of “Avenue Q” tells the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who moves to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. The only apartment he can afford is way out on Avenue Q, where everyone is looking for the same things he is: a decent job, a stable relationship, and a “purpose.” Eventually, Princeton learns to embrace the ups and downs of city life and realizes that “The Real World” isn’t so bad after all.

This fun musical starts TODAY and will go through the weekend. Times below.

Stanley Cup Update!

Pavelski  Delivers Again For Sharks

Joe Pavelski is the San Jose Sharks’ third-line center, but that doesn’t mean he’s not the same caliber as a top-six forward. He finished the regular season third on the team with 66 points, behind only Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton. He plays on the No. 1 power-play unit and helps kill penalties.

Thursday night, Pavelski came through in the clutch, beating Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick with a wicked wrist shot to the top corner of the net at 14:44 of overtime as San Jose topped LA 3-2 to take a 1-0 series lead.

Pavelski’s game-winning goal, which was set up by Sharks forwards Ryan Clowe (who assisted on all three San Jose tallies) and Kyle Wellwood, came on a play the Sharks employed time and time again earlier in the game.

Pavelski’s presence is one of the main reasons this series should be a short one.

Granted, the Kings were a bounce away from stealing the opener, but there was a noticeable difference between the two sides. While Los Angeles had the momentum in the second period and parts of the third, the Kings’ level of play didn’t come close to San Jose’s when the momentum tilted toward the Sharks.

Both teams showed the best they can offer, but when the Sharks were playing their best hockey they were dominating puck possession, leaving little chance for the Kings to create opportunities of their own.

Had the Kings stolen the opener, it would have given them a huge boost in their attempt to upset the Sharks, but with the loss, the future of the Kings in this postseason doesn’t look good.
