Go Green With Your Family This Summer:

Posted by Emily

If you’re looking for some ideas to start with for moving your family toward a more eco-friendly lifestyle, here are seven great changes to make, or things to try, over the next few months.

Try Cloth Diapers
When the weather is nice, I love letting my little ones run around in just a t-shirt and diaper. And of course, cloth diapers are so much cuter on a toddler’s bum than a disposable. I also love hanging my diapers out on line during the summer.
Green Your Laundry Routine
And save money at the same time! I love that so many things that save energy and make your laundry safer and non-toxic can also help to save you a bunch of money.
Plant a Garden
I truly believe that if I can plant a garden and have it do well, then anyone can! Growing your own food is fun, doesn’t have to require a lot of space, and helps to teach your little ones about where food actually comes from.

Choose Natural and Organic Food
With Farmer’s Markets and CSA’s in abundance this time of year, it’s a great way to start making healthy changes to the food your family eats.

Use Safe and Non-Toxic Bath Products
If your kids are anything like mine, they need to be bathed like three times a day during the summer. Make sure the products your using on their sensitive skin are safe and non-toxic.

Green Your Cleaning Routine
Get rid of the conventional cleaning products that are polluting your indoor air and replace them with safe and green cleaning products

Choose Eco-Friendly Activities
This is a great time of year to find inspiration for new and fun activities for your kids. As you’re reading blogs, or searching Pinterest, make sure you choose activities that are eco-friendly too!

Earth Hour March 26th

Earth Hour is a global event organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature, also known as World Wildlife Fund) and is held on the last Saturday of March annually, asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.

DoubleTree by Hilton San Jose will be participating this Saturday, March 26th 8:30pm – 9:30pm, by dimming the lights in our lobby, along with in Spencer’s for Steaks and Chops. We will also we featuring Benziger Cabernet, a certified sustaiable organically grown wine, in showing our support for Earth Hour!

Green Update

jr-green-carbon-footprint.jpg

A few months ago I read online that “carbon footprint” was one of the most overused and pretentious phrases of 2009. So instead of trying to impress you I’m simply going to share something we’re doing at the Doubletree that has made me proud to work here.

Growing up in the beautiful Santa Cruz Mountains has given me a great appreciation of nature and when I heard we were starting a Green Team at the hotel I was very excited. We discussed ways to make a significant impact locally, while still thinking globally. A meeting was set up with Allied Waste to find out how we could improve the efficiency of our recycling program, they had some great tips and off we went.

I am pleased to say that we are now recycling over 50% of the hotels entire waste including composting! Our next plan is to put recycling containers in all guest rooms as well as common areas. So if you’re looking around your office thinking about the changes your organization can make, I’d like to leave you with one simple fact courtesy of www.oberlin.edu:
Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 mature trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 2 barrels of oil, and 4,100 kilowatt-hours of electricity — enough energy to power the average American home for five months.

Think Green, my friends.
