MONTA VISTA HIGH SCHOOL WINS ANNUAL

LODGING MANAGEMENT PROGRAM COMPETITION

Sacramento, CA – High school hospitality students from Monta Vista High School in Cupertino, California took home the international title in the tenth annual American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (EI) International Lodging Management Program (LMP) Competition, held last week in Orlando, Florida.

The Monta Vista team of 10th graders included Emily Hong, Michelle Li, Sonal Patel, and Isabella Zhang, under the leadership of teacher Carl Schmidt, took top honors at the annual competition.   This was the first ever entry from a California high school into this competition.  “The key is no one wins alone,” stated Carl Schmidt when asked about his team’s victory.

Each year, the Lodging Management Program (LMP) hosts students from around the world to showcase their skills in a 2-day competition that challenges participants with events based on real-world job scenarios. The competition also provides opportunities for students and instructors alike to network with representatives from colleges, hotels, and hospitality associations.

Mr. Schmidt incorporated the newly revised Lodging Management Program into his curriculum in September 2012, recognizing there was a need to teach about the fundamentals of the lodging industry.  As well as a teacher, Mr. Schmidt is the founder of the hospitality program at Monta Vista High School in Cupertino, as well as the DECA advisor, and also the Director of the Silicon Valley DECA. DECA is a non-profit organization with a 60 year history of preparing emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

The California Hotel & Lodging Association (CH&LA) and its Education Foundation provided support and guidance to Monta Vista High School program and assisted with the launch of Lodging Management Program at the school.  Additionally, the staff at the DoubleTree by Hilton San Jose, under the direction of General Manager Rob Balmer, supported the team by providing interviews and hotel tours, among other things.  Mr. Balmer, who also serves on the CH&LA Education Foundation Board of Directors has been a long-time advocate for the hospitality career training programs at the high school and community college levels.

“Congratulations to the team at the Monta Vista High School and Carl Schmidt, for winning this international competition,” said Lynn Mohrfeld, CAE, President & CEO of the CH&LA Education Foundation.  “This is clearly the result of industry working in tandem with education, and it’s truly amazing to see what can be accomplished when everyone works together.”

Students compete for scholarship dollars from leading hospitality universities and a trip to New York City for the AH&LA Fall Conference and the Int’l Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show where they meet and network with the leaders of the lodging industry.

Fall 2011 Initiative:  The Caring Community Cookie Project

If you had 2,500 cookies to share with a deserving group of people who care about your community, who would you give them to and why? Thousands of DoubleTree by Hilton volunteers, along with educators and grade school children from their adopted schools and youth organizations in more than 100 cities around the world have been challenged with that exact question, as part of an educator-approved thematic lesson plan that teaches kids the importance of giving, caring and social responsibility.

From policemen and teachers to the military and the elderly…each student will be encouraged to make a conscious decision to select one group of people they feel could use the warmth and good feelings that can be simply found from our DoubleTree by Hilton chocolate chip cookies. All votes tallied from the class will be an important part of the system wide total that will be shared with print and broadcast media around the world. As a result, more than 250,000 chocolate chip cookie acts of kindness and gratitude are expected to be donated by local DoubleTree by Hilton hotels and distributed to community groups from mid-November to mid-December, based on the individual, caring thoughts of kids.

The Caring Community Cookie Project is just another extension to honor and celebrate the 25th anniversary of our brand’s sweet hospitality icon – the DoubleTree by Hilton chocolate chip cookie. Hilton’s Doubletree chain puts chocolate chip cookie on U.S. road trip

Starting Thursday, Hilton’s Doubletree brand will put its signature chocolate chip cookie on a cross-country road show with a special truck in honor of the cookie’s 25th anniversary.

The “welcome” cookie caravan and social media campaign are also designed to promote Doubletree news, including a new longer name (“Doubletree by Hilton”) and a hotel property makeover that’s been in the works for years. The chain has 252 locations in 18 countries.

COMFORT HOTELS: Is chain’s makeover long overdue?

The chain has been reinventing itself for the last five years, with $3 billion going into flat-screen TVs, improved bedding and new amenities. Instead of Neutrogena, the chain’s bathrooms are now stocked with Crabtree and Evelyn’s new “Citron” soaps and shampoos.

The addition of “by Hilton” in the name and logo happened in February, with the formal changing of signs on all hotels, DoubleTree global chief Rob Palleschi told me recently.

It costs real money to change logos, marketing materials and building signs. The changes cost about $125,000 per hotel, Palleschi said; Hilton Worldwide capped owners’ costs at $25,000.

Unlike most upscale brands in recession-plagued 2009 and 2010, Palleschi says the chain had the chance to grow, opening up almost 50 hotels in those two years.

“We were still able to continue. We’re known as a conversion vehicle so during the economic down cycle when a lot of there’s a lot of real estate trading, people wanted a safe harbor,” he told me. “We were the beneficiary.”

So, those cookies?

Doubletree expects to give away more than 250,000 chocolate chip cookies this summer. You can find out more about the marketing campaign on the chain’s special Facebook site, which also details prizes such as tins of cookies, Hilton Hhonors bonus points and more extravagant prizes.

Dubbed the “Cookie CAREavan Tour,” it will hit cities over 10 weeks including Atlanta, Austin, Minneapolis and Seattle.

Cookie factoids: Each cookie weighs more than two ounces and has an average of 20 chocolate chips each. The chain hands out more than 21 million freshly baked cookies each year.

Readers: Have you noticed a difference in recent years at Doubletree “by Hilton” hotels? Have you noticed the name change? Finally…how about those cookies?
