Top 10 Places for Labor Day fun!

10. Wander in Monterey: You don’t even need a reason to visit Monterey; the drive alone, which winds past the coast we all know is there but hardly ever get to see, almost makes it worth it. Monterey and nearby Carmel make a favorite escape for San Joseans, even if all they do when they get there is sit in their car and stare at the ocean.

9. Hike in Marin: Did you know we have a national seashore? It’s in Marin, along with several other expanses of national park land that are rich in the kind of scenery we just don’t have in the South Bay. Hike Muir Woods, or bask in the convergence of natural and man-made beauty at Fort Baker, and take a moment to ponder what the Bay Area looked like before we started building upon it.

8. Hop on POPOS in San Francisco: Busy downtown San Francisco is actually home to tons of hidden public spaces on private property (privately-owned public open spaces, or POPOS)—little patches of green on high-rise rooftops or in central atriums of buildings.

7. Surf in Pacifica: Pacifica is what every other coastal town hopes to be: quaint, sweet, and quiet except for the constant crashing of the Pacific. The big waves make for ample surfing opportunities for sportier types. The weather could be better, but when San Jose is in the throes of the dog days, the fog couldn’t be more welcome.

6. Go Berry-Picking in the Santa Cruz Mountains: Spending your day off at the Boardwalk? So obvious. Santa Cruz County has always been one of the state’s agricultural powerhouses, and many of the smaller farms let you pick your own produce straight from the vine. We suggest the family-friendly Gizdich Ranch in Watsonville for beginners, where you can find apples, blackberries, boysenberries, raspberries.

5. Go Antiquing on Alameda: Alameda has a huge antique culture, much to the delight of local vintage-lifestyle enthusiasts. Hell, the city itself is a time-capsule, its downtown drag dripping in midcentury architecture and signage. Do the antique-shop hop up and down Park Avenue, or come on a designated Sunday and check out the Alameda Antiques Faire. The Antiques Faire is held the first Sunday of every month at the old naval base, a huge flea market where vendors of everything from furniture to vintage fashion gather and ply their wares.

4. Explore East Bay Open Space: On the other side of the Oakland hills lies a gorgeous, hilly area that’s more Marin than Martinez. Take a twilight drive down Highway 24 and take in the scenery, then stop in cozy downtown Walnut Creek for drinks or dinner.

3. Hobnob in Blackhawk: What’s Blackhawk, you ask? It’s a tiny, insulated, master-planned community in the 925 where “all the rich people hide”. The amount of wealth going around in Blackhawk is kind of appalling, but swinging by for a day can be fun. Take a ride across the county line to window-shop at the Blackhawk Plaza shopping center, where there’s a plastic surgeon right in the mall.

2. Be a Tourist in Napa: C’mon – when you live here, you have to take a wine tour at some time or another. If you haven’t taken that rite of passage yet, take a trip one of the day’s this Labor Day to Wine Country and get drunk in the classiest way possible. Book a wine tour, or plan it on your own. Just make sure to wait a little while before you drive back. Might want to eat something, too.

Swan Lake is the undisputed crown jewel of classical ballet. Dennis Nahat’s dramatic four-act setting of this masterpiece features over 135 characters with opulent costumes and scenery from designer David Guthrie. Performed to one of Tchaikovsky’s most memorable scores, this powerful tale of love’s triumph over evil follows Prince Siegfried as he attempts to rescue his beloved Princess Odette from the wicked and lecherous Baron Von Rothbart, who has cast a spell on the young beauty and turned her into his Swan Queen.

DoubleTree by Hilton Introduces New Global Brand Identity

Article from BusinessWire:

Hilton Worldwide today introduced a new brand logo and name for DoubleTree by Hilton (currently Doubletree) in front of more than 1,900 hotel owners, operators and corporate executives at the company’s first-ever Global Partnership Conference in Orlando. This first phase of a renewed DoubleTree by Hilton business strategy has been developed to further reinforce the brand’s relationship within the Hilton Worldwide portfolio of hotels and the company’s continued commitment to the future growth, expansion, and evolution of DoubleTree by Hilton within the hospitality industry.

“The introduction of our new DoubleTree by Hilton global identity communicates, with a new unified worldwide look, the brand’s proud Hilton Worldwide affiliation and acts as a stronger symbol for current and future customers to associate today’s DoubleTree by Hilton with its highly positive brand attributes”

The DoubleTree by Hilton logo and name officially will be launched during the first half of 2011, as part of a comprehensive rebranding initiative that will feature new advertising, marketing and communications campaigns, as well as new amenities and services for guests at DoubleTree by Hilton’s fast-growing collection of 240 hotels on five continents.

Design features of the DoubleTree by Hilton brand identity include:

* Addition of “by Hilton” to the brand name in proper theme and variation, to create a more direct affiliation and distinction between DoubleTree and its parent company, Hilton Worldwide;
* Introduction of a modern, sophisticated, stylized illustration of the brand’s signature two trees;
* Integration of new, contemporary fonts and color palettes custom-designed for the brand

“By celebrating a modern, updated look and feel for DoubleTree by Hilton in logo, product and services, we hope this new brand strategy will enhance name recognition and consumer preference and energize these outstanding hotels’ natural and welcoming characteristics for many months and years to come,” said Paul Brown, president – global brands and commercial services for Hilton Worldwide.

Teaching Kids to CARE

Last week, the Doubletree Hotel San Jose‘s Teaching Kids To CARE program, had a fun-filled day with Bachrodt Elementary School’s second grade class. The children had been working hard the last few months collecting canned food for low-income families and the Doubletree San Jose staff wanted to reward the children for all their accomplishment.

The excited second grade class came to the hotel and was shown around by the staff to different parts of the hotel (such as, where the delicious chocolate chip cookies are made, one of the guest rooms, and much more) and finished the day with a delicious lunch.

The kids learned a lot about world hunger, along with CARE, and had a blast doing it.

For every item collected, Doubletree will donate $0.10 to Second Harvest Food Bank, where kids will be helping other kids in need around their community.

Second Harvest Food Bank

The last few months, Doubletree Hotel San Jose’s CARE Committee, has teamed up with Bachrodt Elementary School in collecting canned food to donate to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and Modesto. All of the food collected will be distributed to low income families with in the area between Daly City and Gilroy. The last fiscal year (July 2009 – July 2010), Second Harvest collected and distributed over 45.5 million pounds of nutritious food to families in need.

Last month, Doubletree San Jose’s Care Committee, visited the Bachrodt Elementary and introduced the program and concept of hunger to the second grade class.

This week, the class will be coming to the hotel to deliver their collected food, get a tour of the hotel, and enjoy in a celebratory lunch for all their hard work.
