“Vacations are not about getting away, but about getting in ‘touch,’ ” according to a Chinese fortune. Although trips can test the strength and longevity of couples, they can also create a special kind of intimacy and allow each partner to feel more free to express his emotions and feelings. Exotic, tropical or just plain fun settings can bring out the kid in adults and help rejuvenate relationships that might need a lift.

Step 1

Plan your trip with your loved one. The last thing you want is to surprise her with a trip to Aruba and later find out that she’s always dreamed of visiting the Bay Area. Ask her where she has always wanted to spend time and choose a destination together.  The element of surprise is always romantic, but you can surprise her with gifts and romantic activities while you’re on the trip.

Step 2

Research romantic vacation destinations and select one. “Travel and Leisure” magazine has an online list of the 50 most romantic places on Earth, including San Jose.  Also enlist the help of your friends, relatives and colleagues, who might be able to offer suggestions.

Step 3

Plan your accommodations and itinerary with your partner. Perhaps he’ll want to stay at an upscale hotel one night or a cozy bed and breakfast the following evening.  Plan your activities; remember, travelers often stumble upon intimate spots during their trips, so be open to being spontaneous, which can spark romance at the most unexpected of times.

Step 4

Surprise your partner with romantic gestures on your trip. Romance can inspire the most stoic of people, so don’t be afraid to ask hotel or restaurant staff for help.  Ask housekeeping to leave rose petals on the bed or chocolates in unexpected locations, etc.  Most importantly, pay attention to your loved one’s wants and desires during the trip and maintain a sense of wonder and delight in her and the romantic destination you’re visiting together.
