6 Tips for Boardng Etiquette

Being the DoubleTree by Hilton Airport Hotel San Jose is less than 1 mile away from the San Jose International Airport, we get many travelers flying in at all times of the year! Here are some tips for Boarding Etiquetter that will make everyone’s flying experience, a greater one.

With skinny aisles, cramped seats, and lack of storage space, boarding a plane can be like a gymnastics performance. The likelihood of travelers being tired, hungry, frustrated—or all three—is high. And so well before the flight takes off, manners can easily fly out the window. Make the process as easy as possible with these tips from a frequent traveler.

1. Don’t be a gate lingerer. Everyone knows the order of how a plane is boarded. It starts with those who need extra assistance due to physical challenges, then moves to parents traveling with kids, then first and business class, then economy starting at the back of the plane. Blocking traffic next to the gate before your row is called annoys passengers and gate agents, and it doesn’t get you on the plane any quicker.

2. Save your personal saga. If you’d like to get your seat changed—or anything else that’s not of the upmost urgency—the time to ask the flight attendant is not immediately when you board. With a line of people behind you, it only slows everyone up and usually the flight attendant can’t do anything about your request then anyway.

3. Don’t be an aisle hog. When you get to your seat, place your personal items on it and try to pull your carry-on bag in behind you, waiting until there’s a break in traffic to hoist it up. If you need help, ask for it. It’s better to safely stow than accidentally whack someone.

4. Quickly stow, then sit. The time to take things out of your suitcase that you’ll need in-flight is while still in the terminal—not while standing in the aisle.

5. Be flexible about overhead space. Don’t spend time trying to find a prime spot for your carry-on, and leave others’ belongings alone as best you can. If there’s no room around for your luggage, now is the time to flag down a flight attendant—they’re usually keyed-in to people needing help with storage and can direct you to a vacant overhead bin or storage space.

6. Save the bathroom trip. Don’t try to get down the aisle to go use the restroom while people are getting settled. If you must, wait until everyone is seated and ask if it’s OK. Otherwise you could delay take-off.

Happy Boss’s Day!

Happy Boss’s Day to all the wonderful boss’s out there! A huge thank you to all our Boss’s at the DoubleTree by Hilton San Jose!

Boss’s Day (alternative spelling Boss’ Day, also known as Bosses Day or National Boss Day) is a secular holiday celebrated on October 16 in the United States and Canada. It has traditionally been a day for employees to thank their boss for being kind and fair throughout the year. The holiday has been the source of some controversy and criticism in the United States, where it is often mocked as a Hallmark holiday.[citation needed]

One interesting feature of this occasion in India, is that bosses present gifts to their subordinates.

History

Patricia Bays Haroski registered “National Boss’s Day” with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in 1958. She was working as a secretary for State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Illinois at the time and chose October 8 because she forgot that the birthday of her boss, who was her father, was actually on the 16th. Four years later in 1962, Illinois Governor Otto Kerner backed Haroski’s registration and officially proclaimed the day.

National Boss’s Day has become an international celebration in recent years and now is observed in countries such as Australia, India and South Africa and very recently Ireland and the UK.

Hallmark did not offer a Boss’s Day card for sale until 1979. It increased the size of its National Boss’s Day line by 90 percent in 2007

How to Recover From Air Travel

A few tips on airplane travel when your coming to stay at DoubleTree by Hilton San Jose Airport Hotel!

Once we set foot on an airplane, we essentially become baggage. We can’t do anything to reduce the length of the flight, eliminate the bumpiness or render our seats any more comfortable. Rapid recovery from a plane flight does rest in our hands, however, both in the way we approach the flight itself and the steps we take once we land. Plan carefully, and your jet lag will vanish rapidly; ignore the effects of the flight on your body and it may take days to reset your internal clock.

Step 1

Schedule meetings at your destination based on the time zone from which you are departing. If you live on the West Coast and have a meeting in New York, set the meeting for 1:00 p.m., which would be 10:00 a.m. according to your internal clock. This allows you to stay focused and remain at your best during such meetings, especially if you’re taking a short trip with a rapid turnaround.

Step 2

Drink lots of water during your flight. Airplane cabins are extremely dry and dehydration makes it tougher to recover. If you’re not sure you can get water on the plane, purchase some at the airport after you go through security; you can’t bring liquids in large amounts through the security checkpoint, but you can purchase them afterward. Continue drinking water once you reach your destination, and stay away from alcohol or caffeine on the plane; both are diuretics, which further dry you out.

Step 3

Gauge your arrival time and plan to either sleep or stay awake on the plane accordingly. If you arrive in the later half of the day (late afternoon or evening), then stay awake on the plane; you’ll be tired and want to sleep when you land. If you land in the morning or early part of the day, try to sleep on the plane so you’ll be refreshed when you arrive.

Step 4

Exercise on the plane, even if it’s just a little bit. Get up and stretch periodically, and walk up and down the aisles. If you can’t get out of your seat, then perform small stretching exercises centered around your legs and feet. If you have a stopover, see if you can get off the plane, then walk or perform some basic exercises in the terminal. It keeps your blood flowing and prevents aches, which can lengthen your recovery time from the flight.

Step 5

Caffeinate after you land if you arrive in the morning, and avoid napping in the day if you can help it. Coffee, tea or caffeinated soda will keep you alert and awake until the evening, when you can engage in your normal sleep cycle. Conversely, stay away from caffeine if you land in the evening; it disrupts your normal sleep patterns.

Step 6

Exercise in the morning after you land, especially if you can do so outdoors in the sunshine or in a brightly lit gym. The lights and activity help your body naturally reset its internal clock, speeding your recovery. If you have trouble getting up, set an alarm clock to help you.

San Jose Sharks Start Strong!

CBSSports.com Article:

” SAN JOSE, Calif. — All four lines scored goals, the power play clicked and the newcomers all made contributions. All in all, it was a pretty productive season opener for the San Jose Sharks.

Joe Pavelski and Andrew Desjardins scored two goals apiece and the new-look Sharks used their highest scoring season opener ever to beat the Phoenix Coyotes 6-3 on Saturday night.

“Everybody played well, everybody skated well,” captain Joe Thornton said. “Once we got the first couple of goals early we sensed they were kind of deflated. The lines worked out well. Everyone is still learning each other so we can still get better. But it was a good game.”

Newcomer Michal Handzus and Ryane Clowe also scored and Patrick Marleau had two assists for the Sharks, who jumped on the Coyotes from the start and finished with 52 shots on goal.

“The team played very well from the get-go so that took the pressure a little bit off me,” Greiss said.

The Sharks scored twice in the opening period and then broke the game open with a four-goal second as they scored three times overall on the power play.

Pavelski got both of his goals on the power play, adapting nicely to his new role down low with the man advantage after playing mostly at the point last year. He tapped in a pass from Marleau in the first and deflected Dan Boyle’s point shot past Smith in the second to make it 5-1.

The Sharks started quickly, taking 13 of the game’s first 14 shots and breaking out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. They struck first on the power play 14 seconds after Handzus drew a holding penalty from Taylor Pyatt.

Burns did a good job pinching in from the point to keep possession of the puck and Patrick Marleau fed Pavelski from behind the net for an easy tap-in goal. It was a new spot for Pavelski, who played the point on the power play for most of last season.

“We made some mistakes early, couldn’t handle their pressure and they came at us full bore,” coach Dave Tippett said. “They just overwhelmed us for the first two periods. That’s something that’s very disappointing in the way our group reacted.

Great Job Sharks!!! Come watch them take on the Duck on Friday, Oct 14th @ 7pm at DoubleTree by Hilton San Jose‘s 2050 Lobby Lounge & Bar! Flat Screen tv’s, Food, BEER…its the perfect combination!

Everyone should be familiar with the best rainy day activities if they want to avoid that sinking feeling that occurs when you realize the weather has destroyed your best laid plans. Good rainy day activities are ones that allow you to expend energy or relax, but still circumvent the rainy weather outdoors by allowing you to still have fun.

  1. “Board Games” We all remember those childhood boardgames that we would play over and over again. Well lets dust them off and play them! It’s not like we ever forget how to play…  If you’re staying in a hotel, such as the DoubleTree by Hilton San Jose, call down to the front desk! They’re sure to have a great selection.
  2. “Movie Marathons” If you bought the “Twilight” series or any other box set of movies and never had a chance to watch them, then now is your chance. Snuggling up on the couch and relax with some popcorn and hot cocoa. At our hotel, we have great movies picks at your fingertips! Just go to OnDemand!
  3. “Clear Out The Attic” It might sound more like a chore than one of the best rainy day activities, but attics can be fun places. You may find old valentines, photos, or even priceless heirlooms left up there by the previous owners. Or perhaps your suitcase? Go through and organize your it! It can only help :)
  4. “Write letters (better yet, Reviews)” There are plenty of occasions when we get upset and mean to complain about things but never get around to it. Sending those letters of complaint to Senators, grocery stores and banks is one of the best ways to spend a rainy day. We sure hope you don’t have any complaints about the DoubleTree by Hilton San Jose, but if there is, we’d love to hear it! Write us one Trip Advisor or send in a comment card!

With the technology these days you can download a new book in minutes! Same as the boardgames, call down to the front desk and we’d be happy to help.
  6. “Drink” Let’s be honest and say that a lot of people do not need much of an excuse to drink, but nevertheless, we are going to give you a new one. It is raining outside! what else is there to do? 2050 Lobby Lounge & Bar is only an elevator ride away! Come down to our Lobby Bar and grab a drink…or 2. And stumble yourself back up to your room.
  7. “Sing” Practice your singing skills on a karaoke machine or in the shower. You want to be able to dazzle the girls/guys at the next karaoke gig in town, so why not get some practice in. Our ClubMax Nightclub would be a perfect place to practice! We’re open Friday and Saturdays from 8pm-2am. Come sing, dance, and have a great time!
  8. “Nothing” When you were a kid you had to go to school and now that you are grown up, there seems to be some kind of reason to run all over town. So, why not have a day off? Just stay in bed, sleep and enjoy yourself as doing nothing is one of the best activities for adults on a rainy day. Our SweetDream Plush Top Mattresses gives you no excuse to not relax and take a nap. You deserve it!

Hope you all survive this cold, rainy weather! But don’t worry, it wont last long being that its supposed to be in the 70′s this weekend :)
