Sharks: Stanley Cup Update

by: CBCSports.ca

The San Jose Sharks were exactly what you would expect them to be – flirtatious with their own extinction.

But in what may well be a metaphor for their entire season, they beat the Los Angeles Kings in overtime, 4-3, with an unlikely cast of heroes.

Joe Thornton scored the winning goal by finding Willie Mitchell on his hip, a stray puck at his feet and a wide-open net in front of him 2:22 into bonus coverage. He swiped, it traveled, and the Sharks advanced to the second round of the Western Conference playoffs against either Detroit or Chicago.

And that goal came after the Sharks’ penalty kill, which has basically been the undercarriage of a power play goal all season long and allowed goals to Justin Williams and Trevor Lewis Monday, timed out a five-minute charging major to Jamie McGinn for running Brad Richardson 3:23 from the end of the third period. They allowed three worrisome shots near the end of regulation, but crushed the Kings’ power play in overtime and created Thornton’s goal with a strong rush into the forward zone that turned into luck.

Indeed, the Sharks escaped a series they probably should have handled with ease, but in the end, their depth and ability to erode the Kings’ energies played their part. Los Angeles’ best line in the series, the Richardson-Wayne Simmonds-Kyle Clifford line, was a collective minus-10, on the ice for Kyle Wellwood’s opening goal, plus Heatley’s and Thornton’s as well.

It was a not a series Sharks fans will view as terribly inspiring as they head into their next series, which will begin in all likelihood either Saturday or Sunday, although there are no building conflicts in case the NHL wants it to begin on Friday. They survived, mostly.

Or, as head coach Todd McLellan said when asked to sum up what he’d just seen for the past fortnight, “It’s the Sharks. It’s what we do.”

Winning! Stanley Cup Update

The LA Kings took a four-goal lead just seconds into the second period causing San Jose Coach Todd McLellan to change goalies, replacing Antti Niemi with Antero Niittymaki.

It worked, as Niittymaki would only allow one more goal and the Sharks would score five second-period goals to stun the LA Kings.

Both teams played a conservative, scoreless, third period with limited chances sending the game into OT where Devin Setoguchi would score the game-winner at 3:09.

It started out one-sided with the Kings scoring two goals in the first 2:39 minutes into the game and adding another just before the end of the period at 18:22.

They opened the second period as they started the game scoring just :44 in to the session causing Coach Todd McLellan to give Antti Niemi the rest of the night off.

The Sharks finally got on the board at 3:08 of the second when Patrick Marleau’s slapshot blast got past Jonathan Quick for the first of five goals in the period for the Sharks. Ryane Clowe provided the second goal 3:47 seconds later to gain  momentum.

Logan Couture, another goal by Clowe, and a Joe Pavelski slapshot would gain the tie, 5-5, before period’s end.

Ryan Smyth would score for the only Kings’ goal in the second, and last for the game, beating Niitymaki on the left side at 13:47.

Devin Setoguchi answered the call for the come-from-behind victory to give the Sharks the improbable win.

The Sharks now lead the series 2-1 with confidence going into Thursday’s game at the Staples Center as the Kings will have to regroup.
