The 30 year tradition began in 1950 with local community leader, Don Lima’s store front display of Christmas Characters on his store front on Willow Street.
Today, Christmas in the Park draws over 450,000 people to downtown San Jose during the four-week holiday season.
From local support through fundraising and volunteer Board of Directors, this yearly event is open to the public and is free to the public.
“Each year, the two-acre park at Plaza de Cesar Chavez is transformed into a holiday fantasy with over 60 musical and animated exhibits and glittering lights and the 60-foot City Community Giving Tree. Some of the original displays are housed in one of the largest exhibits, the Lima Train, and include a melting snowman, caroling mice and elf woodcrafters. The Victorian Village, a 25-foot Christmas tree surrounded by the animated Nutcracker Suite exhibit and Santa House welcome park visitors. Guests enter a winter wonderland of lights, songs and entertainment by local schools and groups, and stroll through a forest of trees decorated by San Jose schools, community groups and businesses.”

Last week we worked with a neighborhood elementary school for Teaching Kids to Care program with Doubletree Hotels. Together we are holding a food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank. Drop your canned goods off at the hotel. The students were educated on local hunger needs as well as how to compost food in their households to reduce waste.

We here at the Doubletree are excited to kick off the month of December with the first day of Valle Monte League’s Christmas Tree Elegance 2009. Many of us look forward to this event each winter as it fills our hotel with holiday spirit. We are drawn to take a peek at the Gateway Ballroom foyer, which becomes a winter wonderland all lite up with opulently decorated Christmas trees. Inside the ballroom are daily events such as teas, brunches, a children’s party, and even a grand ball. Many of which include a spectacular fashion show of the upcoming seasonal trends.
