Use Twitter to Find Travel Deals

Twitter relaunched its home page to emphasize “search,” and the impact will reverberate for travel, financial services, lawn mowers — you name it.

Twitter announced the new home page on its blog today.

If you are a travel company and not on Twitter, the new home page may change your thinking fast.

If you run a travel company, whether you are involved in social media or not, this will impact your business.

If you are a deal publisher like Travelzoo, Smarter Travel, Cruise Critic, Travelscream, getaroom.com or Voyij, you have new competition because companies can post their deals without you.

American Airlines Checked Baggage Fees Go Up

old-style-suitcase.jpg

While other airlines have been nibbling around the edges of the checked bag fee question with one set of fees for those paying online and another for those paying at the airport, American Airlines has come out and bluntly said, “Pay more.” Nothing subtle about it.

Effective August 14, 2009, first-checked-bag fees will go from $15 to $20 and second-checked-bag fees will increase by $5 to $30.

Prior to this move, Delta air Lines and USAirways had announced $20 fees for first checked bags, but had kept the $15 charge for those who charged their bags online prior to arriving at the airport. Passengers can expect the airport fees to jump to $20 almost immediately and the online discount may or may not stick. My prediction: the online discount will disappear; why bother?

For anyone confused about the state of airline fees, Kayak.com has a good fee chart. It is relatively up to date, though it still doesn’t include (as of July 27, 2009) the new American Airline fees.

New Terminal Partially Opened at San Jose International Airport

northconcoursesmall.JPG
The first six gates of the new Terminal B Concourse at Mineta San José
International Airport (SJC) opened on an interim basis Wednesday, July 15, marking a
major milestone for the creation of a modern, efficient, and attractive international gateway for
Silicon Valley.

Southwest Airlines will use six of the twelve new gates in Terminal B until the new
facility is entirely completed next summer when other SJC carriers will be added. The interim
activation of the concourse is another step in the complex construction phasing for the airport’s
comprehensive $1.3 billion modernization program. Southwest passengers will continue to check in at Terminal A and claim their baggage at the carousels in the Terminal A garage for the next twelve months until all Southwest operations shift to Terminal B, currently scheduled for June 2010. At that time, ticketing, security checkin, and baggage systems for the new gates will shift permanently to Terminal B.

With the new gates, the airport will also open the first of its restaurants and shops in the
new building with the launch of “The Sharks Cage” by HMS Host, one of the airport’s three
master concessionaires. Sunnyvale’s C.J. Olson’s Cherries, Sunglass Icon, and Sunset News
round out the HMS Host-operated concessions in the new concourse.

Both buildings have been designed and built to achieve environmental goals, and the
airport expects to receive LEED sustainability certification from the U.S. Green Building
Council after completion.
