U.S. Travel Community Commends President Obama’s Commitment to Improve America’s Travel Process

U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow issued the following statement in praise of President Obama’s plans to improve America’s travel process:
“The U.S. travel community applauds President Obama for embracing the power of travel. Our nation currently suffers from an antiquated transportation system that deters travel and hinders America’s productivity. President Obama’s vision and leadership will benefit the millions of Americans who travel each day.
“President Obama has shown that travel is a priority for his Administration. From meeting with one dozen industry leaders in March to today’s announcement, the Obama Administration has demonstrated a unique understanding of the role that travel can play in creating jobs and strengthening the U.S. economy from coast-to-coast.
“We share the President’s commitment to building a world-class travel system that enhances mobility and look forward to working with the Obama Administration on the surface, rail and air travel challenges facing our nation.”

Doubletree Hotel San Jose is a member of the Hilton Family of Hotels, which has committed directionally to the following reductions within operations by 2014:
• We will reduce our energy consumption by 20%.
• We will reduce our Co2 emissions by 20%.
• We will reduce our output of waste by 20%.
• We will also reduce our water consumption by 10%.

The WeatherTrak Smart Water Management solution system monitors weather trends in our specific area such as humidity, cloud cover, rain and wind. It then electronically alters our water control system here on property via data line, thus only watering when necessary.
Doubletree Hotel San Jose was one of the first businesses to partner with Santa Clara Valley
Water District on their new water saving toilet installation program. The new toilets use 1.28 gallons per flush (gpf) compared to the old 3.5 gpf toilets. We have approximated that the program will save more than 10,800 gallons per day which comes out to 4,000,000 gallons per year. This is nearly equal to six Olympic-sized swimming pools!

Twice each year we participate in the Doubletree Brand community outreach project “Teaching Kids to CARE” where we educate children from a local elementary school on environmental sustainability. Most recently we have worked with Reed Elementary in south San Jose.

Other prominent guests included San Jose’s Mayor, Chuck Reed.

The buzz around Washington D.C. is that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is laying the groundwork for a federal green lodging certification program for U.S. hotels.
The EPA plans to roll out its sustainability guidelines by the end of the year, with the goal of giving facilities an outline of the standards necessary to win federal meeting and convention business in the future.
